UCSB Reads:Change begins with learning . . .
The UCSB Library and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, with generous support from many UCSB sponsors, are proud to present the UCSB Reads common reading experience during winter quarter 2009. Community partners include the Santa Barbara Public Library System, the Santa Barbara City College Luria Library, the Westmont College Library, the Antioch University Library, and local high schools.
Each year, this award-winning program engages our broad and diverse community in a series of conversations, lectures, readings, displays, and other activities that explore interdisciplinary issues sparked by the selected read. Copies of the book are distributed free to interested students, and faculty members are encouraged to incorporate the book into their class curricula.
UCSB Reads 2009 aims to:
* Generate informed discussion of key issues by promoting the reading and discussion of books on the specific theme of ethics.
* Encourage the exchange of ideas among members of the campus and Santa Barbara communities. Our community partners include the Santa Barbara Public Library System, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, and Antioch University.
* Create further campus appreciation of the library and the role it plays in education and research.
* Highlight academic strengths of studies in ethics beyond ourselves, across the disciplines.
* Create a sense of fun and camaraderie on campus while addressing an important issue.
This year's theme is Ethics. Beyond ourselves. The book chosen for discussion, Ethics for the New Millennium by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, shows that we can each be happier by treating one another ethically and respectfully. With the help of our sponsors, the UCSB Library will distribute 2,500 free copies of the book to UCSB students, beginning January 21st. [NOTE: All free copies have been distributed.]
